Susan joined Adams & Remers in 2008 and is based full time at our London office. She is widely recognised as an expert in her field, has been recommended by the Legal 500 Directory, has broadcast on radio and television and written for numerous publications including The Sunday Times, Financial Times and BBC on line. She is an accredited mediator, helping to resolve disputes particularly in relation to family issues. She is often appointed administrator of problematic estates by the Court under the provisions of the Supreme Court Act.
She initially practised as a barrister, and requalified as a solicitor in 1986. Susan has specialised since then in private client work, holding senior roles with City based firms and for 9 years as a sole principal with her own Kent-based specialist practice which attracted clients from across the UK.
Susan has lectured for Central Law Training, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and Solicitors for the Elderly and other organisations on (among other things) issues relating to nursing home fee planning, mental capacity, undue influence, conflicts of interest and trustee delegation. Susan's clients particularly appreciate her commitment to finding practical solutions to problems and her caring approach.
Susan specialises in all aspects of wills, probate and trusts, and tax and estate planning, particularly:
- Advice on succession and inheritance issues in respect of owner-managed businesses
- Advice regarding nursing and residential home fees including free NHS care
- Inheritance tax and capital gains tax planning
- Tax efficient family gifting
- Advice for co-habitees with regard to tax and other legal issues
- Advice with regard to disputes in relation to will, probate issues and trusts including the validity of wills
- Mediation (resolution) of disputes
- Services for people with learning disabilities and their families
- Advice on tax and other legal issues relating to the family home and second properties
Susan is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), STEP Working Party with regard to Trustee Risk, the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists, and Solicitors for the Elderly (awarded the first President’s Award). Susan lives in Bickley in Kent and is a Licensed Lay Preacher (Reader) in the Church of England.
